PaperCut is a vendor neutral print control/tracking solution. This means you are not locked into any particular type of hardware or manufacturer. PaperCut works with the majority of modern print devices including those supporting printer languages such as:
- Postscript
- PCL (all versions)
- PCL-GUI
- PCLXL
- HPGL
- HP-GDI
- Epson languages ESC/P2, ESC/PAGE and ESC/PAGE-COLOR
- Ricoh RPCS
- Canon BubbleJet, Canon CAPT, and Canon GARO, Canon UFR, UFRII
- QPDL
- Xerox TIFF6
- Some support for proprietary GDI printers (HBPL, Konica-Minolta, QMS, Samsung, Lexmark, Dell, Brother, Zebra and others)
Many printer manufacturers make their products compatible with the PostScript standard, or PCL (a language developed by HP). We strongly recommend PostScript or PCL compatible printers and drivers if available.
All common connection methods are supported, including USB, LPT Port, TCP/IP (ethernet network printers), standard LPR port, standard TCP/IP ports, and JetDirect. Where possible we recommend networked printers (i.e. one with an ethernet port).
If you are having page counting or other attribute detection issues when using a printer with PaperCut, please see the article Page count problems and how to resolve them. Also see: Printers supporting page-level color detection
PaperCut also supports most wide-format printers and plotters. The printing costs for plotters can be defined using page area based charging.
Notes on individual printer models and manufacturers
Brother
Brother printers supporting PCL and PostScript are support. Some models using proprietary drivers (eg. XL2HB) currently only are supported to a limited extent (e.g. BRMFC9840).
Note August 2009: The Mac driver for the HL-5250DN labelled "CUPS Printer Driver" on the Brother website (a PCL5 driver) has issues with copy count detection. An alternative is to use the driver option labelled "BR-Script Driver" (a PostScript driver) instead. We currently have 1 request for improving the copy count detection on the HL-5250DN using the PCL5 driver on Mac.
Note March 2009: There have been some reports of n-up (2 pages per 1 sheet) printing not being detected on the Brother HL-7050. The solution is to change this option.
Note Feb 2009: For color detection support on the Brother HL-2700CN series either use the PostScript driver or upgrade to version 9.2 for support with the PCL6 driver
Canon
Canon laser printers and copiers work with PaperCut. The majority of Canon BubbleJet printers are compatible.
Note Nov 2009: Color detection on the IRC 2550i range and related using the Canon UFR drivers will require version 9.7 or higher for correct duplex and grayscale detection.
Note Feb 2009: Color detection on the Canon iPF500 range using the Canon UFR driver is not currently supported. If using the advanced client, consider using the charge rates feature to account for color printing costs instead.
Note Oct 2008: Upgrade to PaperCut version 8.5+ for improved support for Canon GARO based printers on the Mac. There are still some known issues with manually canceled jobs but general page account and costing works as normal. (Come on Canon, get your Mac drivers up to scratch!)
Note Dec 2007: Upgrade to version 8.0+ for improved page, copy, paper size and duplex detection on Canon iR and i-SENSYS LBP ranges (e.g. the Canon iR1230 and the Canon i-SENSYS LBP5300)
Datacard
Datacard's photo ID printers use a proprietary, undocumented printer language and are not currently supported by PaperCut.
We have currently had 1 request for adding Datacard printer support.
Dell
PaperCut will work with Dell laser printers. PaperCut NG versions prior to version 6.2.3904 had some issues with duplex detection and may need to upgrade PaperCut to take advantage of this feature in full. The 1320c and related models using the "host based" driver system require PaperCut version 7.5 or higher.
Epson
The current range of AcuLaser, AL, and EPL mono and color laser printers are fully supported by PaperCut. Please ensure the very latest drivers are installed. The majority of inkjets produced over the last 8 years supporting ESC/P2, ESC/PAGE and ESC/PAGE-COLOR will work. On some older inkjet printer models it may not be possible to detect paper size.
Note April 2008: The same bug reported in 2006 (see below) seemed to "surfaced" again and made its way into recent Stylus Photo 2100 drivers. Again Epson has supplied us with a patch. If you are hit by this bug, contact us and we can supply the patch on request with install instructions.
Note 2006: In mid 2006 there were some problems with the Epson Stylus range where jobs may appear to halt or pause in the queue once PaperCut is enabled. This problem is caused by a driver bug. The PaperCut development team has worked with Epson driver developers to address this. Epson have issued a series of patches titled "Third Party Print Accounting Software Patch". These patches are available under the printer's "Drivers & Downloads" section on the Epson website. Drivers released after 2006 will (we hope!) not have this problem.
Fiery RIP
Many of our engineering and graphic design customers have been running PaperCut successfully with Fiery RIP driven devices for many years without any known problems. The key is to ensure that the server printer prints via the RIP and the workstations print via the server queue and not direct to the RIP. In Mac environments, some special configuration may be required.
Gestetner
Gestetner supply a number of driver alternatives with their high-end printers, copiers, and multifunction devices (e.g. DSc338), usually including PCL5 and Postscript. PaperCut Software has tested recent releases of the Postscript and PCL drivers and found these are compatible. We recommend the use of Postscript drivers over other options such as RPCS or PCL.
HP (Hewlett Packard)
HP Laser Printers: PaperCut works with all HP lasers produced over the last 9 years. Where possible, we recommend the PostScript drivers or recent PCL drivers.
PaperCut will work with the HP Universal Driver. We however find that most of our users opt for the light-weight network drivers to support printer sharing and driver deployment. The Universal Driver is in fact a driver that wraps every driver into one installer and hence is quite heavy weight. It's great for a stand-along install, however for network deployments selecting the specific light-weight network drivers by hand usually results predictable behavior and the administrator more control.
Note March 2009: Some organizations running the HP CJL2700n on a Mac OS X Server have reported issues with the printer raising "manual feed" errors. This has been tracked down to a driver bug (a bad PPD). The solution is to use the "Generic Postscript Driver" on the server and the standard driver on the workstations.
Note February 2009: Some users have reported issues with Paused jobs with the HP 2600n (and related) on Windows. Unchecking ‘'Enable bidirectional support'’ in the Ports tab of the printer properties page cures the problem.
Note February 2009: The HP Photosmart C6100 series with PCL5/HP-GL drivers does not currently support page-level color detection. Please use standard color detection (the default) instead.
Note February 2009: The HP P100x series (small home/home office laser printer) is not currently supported, but will be supported in future versions.
Note March 2008: PaperCut releases prior to 8.2 had some problems with copy count detection with recent HP LaserJet 4700dn drivers. Upgrade PaperCut to fix this problem, or contact support for assistance.
Note May 2004: HP Inkjets': Most inkjets work with PaperCut. Some older printers such as Deskjet 640C use nonstandard PCL and PaperCut can have problems analyzing documents printed from older Windows 9X based clients.
IBM
Note Dec 2007: Added improved support for duplex detection on the IBM Infoprinter range (e.g. IBM Infoprinter 1357). Upgrade to version 8.0 or newer to take advantage of the improved detection.
KIP (wide format engineering printers)
PaperCut version 8 and onwards support both the KIP-Script and KIP-GL drivers, including page size detection and page-level color detection.
Note April 2008: Recent versions of KIP drivers caused a few page size detection problems. This was addressed in version 8.2 onwards.
Konica-Minolta
Most Konica-Minolta devices offer multiple driver options, all of which should be compatible with recent versions of PaperCut. As for other brands we recommend the Postscript or PCL drivers where available.
Note Nov 2008: Support for the Konica Minolta 2480MF was added in version 8.5
Note Aug 2008: Support for GDI drivers in the Konica-Minolta Bizhub range was introduced in version 8.5.
Kyocera
Kyocera lasers have a Postscript driver range referred to as KPDL. These drivers are compatible with PaperCut. The Kyocera PCL drivers occasionally use non-standard language extensions (although they claim to be PCL compatible), so the Postscript (KPDL) drivers should be used in preference.
Note Dec 2007: Recent driver updates in the Kyocera FS range (e.g. Kyocera FS9520DN) introduced issues with duplex detection. Upgrade to version 8.0 to resolve duplex detection issues
Lanier
Lanier supply a number of driver alternatives with their high-end printers, copiers, and multifunction devices - usually including PCL5 and Postscript. PaperCut Software has tested recent releases of the Postscript and PCL drivers and found these are compatible. We recommend the use of Postscript drivers over other options such as RPCS or PCL.
Lexmark
The current range of mono and color laser printers work with PaperCut. PostScript drivers are recommended. The "budget" inkjet printers use a proprietary GDI printer language and depending on the model, problems may be experienced. If problems are experienced, please upgrade to the latest version of PaperCut.
Note Sep 2009: The Lexmark C500N uses a proprietary, undocumented printer language and is not currently supported by PaperCut. We have currently had 1 request for adding Lexmark C500N printer support.
Minolta-QMS
All high-end Minolta-QMS lasers work with PaperCut. Use the Postscript driver option if available. Some low to mid-end Minolta lasers such as the Magicolor 2300 DL (Minolta 2300DL) use a host based GDI driver based on technology from Zenographics. Users running early versions of PaperCut should update to the latest version to ensure full support for this and other Minolta printers.
OCE
OCE printers and copiers support Postscript. Some OCE drivers use a proprietary header to set document attributes such as copy count, duplex, etc., which is supported by PaperCut but subject to change by OCE. PaperCut will work with most of the OCE wide-format devices, including custom support for selected proprietary CAD printing output.
OKI
The OKI mono and color lasers support a number of print languages in compatibility mode. We recommend the Postscript driver option.
Note Dec 2007: Upgrade to version 8.0 to add grayscale detection support on the OKI 5600 range.
Panasonic
The Postscript and PCL based print and copy devices are compatible. We currently have a few issues with the GDI based drivers and are not able to support all GDI based models at the current time. We recommend that customers avoid GDI or "host based" printer models at the current time.
Ricoh/Nashuatec
PaperCut supports the current range of Ricoh laser and multi-function printers. Ricoh provide a number of print driver options including PCL, Postscript and RPCS (Ricoh’s own language). PaperCut supports all drivers, however we recommend the Postscript driver option if available.
Note Nov 2006: Recent RPCS drivers experienced page count and/or grayscale detection problems. Upgrade to the latest version if you are experiencing this problem.
RISO
PaperCut supports both RISO PostScript and GDI drivers. Support for RISO GDI drivers was added in version 9.3.
Note March 2008: PaperCut releases prior to 8.2 had an issue with standard color detection on the RISO HC5500 (PostScript driver). Upgrade, or contact PaperCut Support if you experience this problem.
Samsung
PaperCut supports most Samsung printers. Many Samsung printers (e.g. Samsung ML-2010, CLP-510) are supplied with proprietary GDI based drivers (QPDL) with no option for standard Postscript or PCL drivers. PaperCut Software has implemented support for most recent Samsung GDI printers. Model numbers and driver versions are constantly changing. PaperCut users are recommended to upgrade to the latest version and contact PaperCut support if any printers do not account as expected.
Savin
Savin supply a number of driver alternatives with their high-end printers, copiers, and multifunction devices - usually including PCL5 and Postscript. PaperCut Software has tested recent releases of the Postscript and PCL drivers and found these are compatible. We recommend the use of Postscript drivers over other options such as RPCS or PCL.
Sharp
Sharp MFP (MultiFunction Printers) are supplied with a number of standards compliant driver options - normally Postscript, PCL6 and PCL5. All drivers are compatible with PaperCut. We recommend using the Postscript driver.
Toshiba
Toshiba offer Postscript based drivers for these devices and are compatible with PaperCut. The driver's in-built accounting code feature found in the e-Studio devices can sometimes conflict with PaperCut. This may need to be disabled (this is also not required as PaperCut offers a more advanced account selection feature).
Xerox/Tektronix/Fuji
The DocuPrint and Phaser Series accommodate PCL and Postscript. Use the Postscript drivers if available. Some lower end DocuPrint systems only support PCL, in which case we recommend the PCL6 drivers. New Xerox printers using the HBPL or TIFF6 printer language drivers are also supported. Wide-Format printers such as the Xerox 6204 are supported in the latest versions of PaperCut NG.
Note Sep 2009: Some sites have reported issues with the "Xerox Global Driver" when using windows Vista. Try the "Generic" driver if issues occur.
Zebra Label Printers
Initial support for Zebra label and receipt printers was added to PaperCut in May 2006.
If you have a question about a specific printer or driver not addressed here, please feel free to contact our support team.
